Choju Giga is a picture scroll painting handed down at Kosanji Temple in Kyoto and a designated National Treasure.
It depicts animals and people in a caricatured style, reflecting the social climate of the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. In some scenes, techniques similar to those used in modern manga are seen, leading to the work being called "Japan's oldest manga." This traditional motif, passed down since ancient times, has been expressed through fragrance.
